Frank Lampard and NYCFC stars score in win; Rapids steal late victory


Frank Lampard scored his first goal of the season and New York City FC earned a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

David Villa and Andrea Pirlo also scored for NYCFC, which is in second in the Eastern Conference behind Philadelphia. The Union had their club-record eight-game unbeaten streak end.

Lampard's goal in the eighth minute came in his first start of the season. Villa scored his 11th goal of the season in the 21st minute.

Pirlo converted a free kick for his first career MLS goal in the 50th minute.

Roland Alberg scored from a penalty in the 55th minute and the Union pulled within 3-2 on Frederic Brillant's own goal in the 88th minute after NYCFC's Jason Hernandez was sent off with a second yellow card three minutes earlier.

Marco Pappa scored in the 89th minute to give the MLS-leading Colorado Rapids a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire.

Pappa entered late as a substitute for Dillon Powers and scored on a left-footed shot that deflected off defender Jonathan Campbell.

Kevin Doyle had opened the scoring for Colorado in the 57th minute with a right-footed shot that slid underneath goalkeeper Sean Johnson's right hand.

Joey Calistri tied it for Chicago in the 81st minute, trapping Rodrigo Ramos' header pass and sending a left-footed stab into the far corner of the goal for his first career MLS goal.

The Rapids, with a league-best 31 points, set a franchise record for the earliest point in the season to surpass the 30-point mark at 15 games.

Shea Salinas scored on the last touch of the game in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-2 draw with with Orlando City.

Orlando, which ran its unbeaten streak to four games, opened the scoring in the 66th minute when Seb Hines out-jumped a defender to head in Adrian Winter's corner.

Salinas had an assist when the Earthquakes tied it in the 85th minute, sending a perfect pass across to Chad Barrett.

It appeared Orlando would have the victory when Julio Baptista scored in the 90th minute, trapping a pass from Carlos Rivas and spinning around to rocket a left-footed shot that diving San Jose keeper David Bingham got a hand on but couldn't keep it out of the net.

But Salinas' goal ensured a spare of the spoils, though San Jose remain winless in eight road games.

Drew Moor scored on a diving header in the 79th minute as Toronto FC earned a rare win over the LA Galaxy, 1-0.

Toronto had been winless in its previous 10 games against LA, a stretch that included five Galaxy victories and five draws. It was the Canadian club's first win over LA at home since 2008.

On a night that began with Moor cradling his newborn baby boy during the national anthems, the Toronto defender scored his 24th career goal.

Benoit Cheyrou sent in a long ball that Eriq Zavaleta headed backward toward the net, placing it perfectly for Moor to launch past goalkeeper Brian Rowe

Kelyn Rowe took advantage of a defensive lapse to break a deadlock in the 55th minute in the New England Revolution's 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Teal Bunbury took the ball into the corner, then sent a pass to the top of the box to Rowe for a low, hard shot that go past goalkeeper David Ousted for his third goal of the season.

London Woodberry also scored for New England, while Nicolas Mezquida scored for Vancouver.

Columbus Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark had three saves in a 0-0 draw with the Montreal Impact.

It was Clark's fourth clean sheet of the season as Columbus had 61 percent of possession and attempted 12 shots to Montreal's eight.

Didier Drogba left the field with an injured wrist in the 59th minute but returned moments later for the Impact.

The Houston Dynamo had three great chances in the last minute but D.C. United held on for a goalless draw.

Two of United goalkeeper Bill Hamid's four saves came in the last minute of stoppage time. First, he got a hand on Mauro Manotas' shot, then got a foot on a header by Raul Rodriguez off Boniek Garcia's ensuing corner kick.

The game ended when David Horst sent the rebound over the frame.

Yura Movsisyan converted a penalty to level the score in the 70th minute andReal Salt Lake held on for a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers.

Movsisyan drew the penalty when Jermaine Taylor tripped him near the top left corner of the 18-yard box.

Juan Manuel Martinez had opened the scoring for Real Salt Lake in the 17th minute with a header from the right side of the six-yard box off Javier Morales' corner.

Fanendo Adi's tied it for Portland in the 29th minute with a breakaway off Taylor's pass. It was Adi's ninth goal of the season, putting him second on the MLS goals list behind NYCFC's Villa.

Lucas Melano scored on a putback after Diego Valeri's shot crashed off the post, giving Portland a 2-1 lead just before halftime, butMovsisyan's penalty salvaged the draw.
