SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Tuesday was the home opener for the San Francisco Giants and fans not only enjoyed a victory, but saw a superhero throw out the first pitch.

A standing-room only crowd packed AT&T Park and roared when the Bat Mobile drove onto the field. They yelled louder when Batkid, five-year-old Miles Scott, stepped out. He was accompanied by pitcher Matt Cain. Scott, now in remission from leukemia, unlimbered his arm and let the ceremonial first pitch fly.

"I mean, it would be, it would have been one of my favorite things to do probably as a kid," said Giants infielder Brandon Crawford.

"He's, you know, a big Giants fan and so why not. And, Opening Day's about celebration and making people smile and also remind people what's important in life, some great human stories," said Giants President and CEO Larry Baer.

And, one of those stories is the continuing recovery of Giants fan Bryan Stow who was at the ballpark Tuesday. Stow suffered major injuries when he was attacked outside Dodger Stadium in 2011.

For people who don't believe that baseball is a religion in this country, and especially in San Francisco, they have never been to an Opening Day.

By the time the Giants arrived in town, they were already leading the National League West.

But based on the turnout at the ballpark today, baseball is back and hope springs anew.

Everything is good, because when baseball's back, that means spring.

And, with Tuesday's 7-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, fans are optimistic. After all, it's an even year and the last two have brought World Series victories.
