Warriors' Steve Kerr accepts NBA Coach of the Year award

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- On Wednesday the Golden State Warriors could win their playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Up 3-1, Golden State will be led by the NBA's Coach of the Year. On Tuesday, Steve Kerr received that honor.

As he accepted the Red Auerbach Trophy for NBA Coach of the Year, Kerr almost never spoke about himself, instead crediting all those around him for making him a winner.

"When you have a group of players especially who care for each other and work this hard and sacrifice, that's the most rewarding feeling of all," he said.

To his right was his right-hand man Luke Walton, the assistant who took the helm for 43 games when Kerr couldn't due to painful complications from off-season back surgery.

"This guy deserves a little credit, too," said Warriors General Manager Bob Myers while gesturing to Walton. "Can you give him like a shoe from the trophy?"

"Every time that I would be anxious or nervous or worried about something he would constantly remind me -- you have really good players out there, we're going to be just fine," said Walton.

Among his admirers are Kerr's former coaches -- Lute Olson from the University of Arizona and Jerry Marvin from Palisades High School in Los Angeles.

"He wasn't the quickest, he didn't jump the highest, I don't think he even shot the best, but he was the best combination of all of those," said Marvin. "He had a perfect attitude."

And with all his team has accomplished so far this season, Kerr acknowledged his own personal struggles.

"This was the hardest year of my life, not even close," said Kerr. "And I'm incredibly lucky to have this amazing family and all these beautiful people around me."

Indeed with the likes of Curry on the floor and Kerr at the helm, this is clearly an organization that's built to last and to win for a very long time.
