SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Two victims of a drive-by shooting on a San Francisco freeway are recovering Sunday morning from gunshot wounds. Police say someone in a car fired shots at another.

Traffic on I-280 was backed up for hours from the incident.

This is not the type of family reunion one family wanted, but they're here for two of their loved ones.

"Around 4:30, we have one vehicle traveling on that intersection when another vehicle opened fire on that vehicle, striking the driver and the passenger multiple times," SFPD Officer Albie Esparza said.

San Francisco fire crews, heard on a dispatch recording, arrived to find the victims.

Police say one victim was shot in the head and neck and the other was shot in the torso and leg.

This all unfolded at the I-280 north, Hwy 101 south connector.

Relatives say they will make it through and now police are hoping to learn from the victims what may have led to the shooting on this busy stretch of highway.

"We don't have a motive. We don't know if it's gang-related. However, all of our shootings in San Francisco and stabbings are reviewed by a gang task force to see whether it is gang-related or motivated," Esparza said.

The traffic congestion in the area lasted for two hours before the scene was cleared.

It was a rare incident that shocked many weekend commuters traveling through a seemingly safe area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to get in touch with the San Francisco Police Department anonymously at (415) 575-4444 or via text at TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
