Data shows dramatic rise in carpool cheaters in Bay Area
New data shows a dramatic increase in the carpool cheaters across the Bay Area.

More Bay Area drivers are cheating in carpool lanes than ever before.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, an average of 41 percent of drivers on Santa Clara County's expressways were cheating in the diamond lanes at 28 locations. That's nearly double the violations from five years ago.

Caltrans says the cheating rate on Highway 101 near Whipple Avenue in Redwood City was more than 30 percent. In total, the CHP is on track to issue more than 22,000 carpool citations this year in the Bay Area, up 3,000 from a year ago.

The fine, by the way, runs $491.
