Fatal accident cleared from I-880 lanes in Milpitas

MILPITAS, Calif. (KGO) -- All lanes of I-880 in Milpitas are open again following a deadly accident that shutdown the northbound lanes for several hours Monday morning.

A person was killed after an initial crash between two cars on northbound I-880 just north of Montague Expressway. According to the CHP, those cars were in the middle lane and eventually more cars hit those cars. As many as four vehicles were involved. It appears one of the drivers of the original accident got out of the vehicle and was hit by another car while walking on the freeway. The coroner was called out at 12:21 a.m.

All northbound lanes of 880 from Montague to Great Mall Parkway were blocked off during the beginning of the investigation. The CHP eventually opened up some lanes during the investigation and just after 3 a.m. they opened up the freeway after clearing the scene. No word on the identification of the victim.
