New Larkspur ferry run added to schedule
Golden Gate Ferry has added an 8:40 a.m. Larkspur ferry run for the next nine months to handle a growing number of morning commuters.

LARKSPUR, Calif. (KGO) -- North Bay commuters got to sample a new option for getting to San Francisco. The Golden Gate Ferry started a brand new 8:40 a.m. run.

Who wouldn't want to take in the stunning views of the Bay while someone else drives you to work? Turns out, the North Bay is on board with this form of travel and has created a crowding problem.

"The 7:50 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. are always packed and I got bumped a few times because they don't take, you know, but so many bikes," said San Rafael resident John Swartz.

Transportation officials hear you and have taken action. Today, they added a new trip. There's now an 8:40 a.m. ride from Larkspur to San Francisco. It's nestled in between the crowded 8:20 a.m. and the kind of too late for most people 9:15 a.m.

"I love it! I've been excited I read about it in the paper and thought finally. It's a good time to get to work," said Swartz.

"I think taking other ways to work instead of cars is wonderful and great for commuters because this ferry is always packed -- so good job ferry," said Annie Schmidt, Larkspur resident.

We heard enthusiasm but didn't quite see it. Look at the crowd at 8:20 this morning and then look at the new 8:40. Only 50 people showed up for a ferry that can hold more than 400. Commuters aren't worried- saying it will only be a matter of time.

Some commuters say while they appreciate this new extra ride in the morning, they want officials to take it one step further and add one for the evening commute.

"Sometimes I am running to catch a ferry even if it's 20 minutes ahead of time and it's sold out and it's kind of surprising for the 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. ferries, sometimes having to wait an hour to get home can be frustrating," said Jess Lewis, Larkspur resident.

A spokesperson said the transit agency is open to suggestions on how to improve it. The 8:40 a.m. ferry ride is scheduled to last for 9 months and if it doesn't catch on they will cancel it.
