SAN JOSE (KGO) -- Southbound I-680 in San Jose will look a little different during the afternoon rush later today. Caltrans will turn on 20 ramp metering lights, meant to help smooth out the traffic flow.

The metering lights will be turned on from Highway 101 in San Jose to Scott Creek Road just over the Alameda County Line.

The southbound meters will be activated at 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. The lights will be fully operational on September 1. Overnight Caltrans explained why it's taken a while to turn the lights on.

There is no timetable for turning on other lights on the Alameda County Side of 680.

The metering lights do not have cameras attached to them but CHP will be monitoring this area.
