Study: 3 Bay Area cities among worst in U.S. for drivers
Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco were ranked low in a study comparing commutes in U.S. cities in terms of time, money and safety.

According to a new study, driving in the Bay Area is going to cost you a lot and we're not just talking about money.

WalletHub, the online personal finance resource, released a new study comparing the 100 most populated U.S. cities according to the costs of car ownership and commuting -- in terms of time, money and safety.

The average driver spends about $1,700 per household in wasted time and fuel and another $515 for maintenance and repairs because of the poor quality of our roads. The Bay Area didn't do well -- Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco were in the bottom 15 percent.

One thing you can't avoid is high gas prices; AAA says nationally drivers are paying $2.76 a gallon. In San Francisco, it's almost a $1 more at $3.63 a gallon.

WalletHub has some money saving tips for drivers: keep your tires properly inflated, slow down, use cruise control for long distances and always have an alternate route.
