Hot temperatures kick off October
With extreme heat on the way firefighters are on alert around the Bay Area due to the high fire danger.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Summer may be over, but the Bay Area is about the experience some of the hottest temperatures of the year. The heat and the high fire danger are causing lots of concerns for firefighters.

It's not the dog days of summer, but October is about to heat up. San Francisco's Crissy Field already feels more like Los Angeles, but nobody's complaining.

"It's better than having fog and cold. Not bad to have an actual summer every now and then," San Francisco resident Moustafa Harfoush said.

Weed whackers are going full tilt in Oakland's Hiller Highlands where increased heat and fire danger has volunteers clearing dry brush on properties. The Oakland firestorm happened there in Oct. 1991.

Mill Valley firefighter Mike St. John is walking the south slope of Mt. Tam monitoring the weather and wind with a device. With dry brush all around, the heat wave isn't welcome.

"We're still in a drought and with a few days like this, the fuels are going to dry out and be much more susceptible to a potential large fire," St John said.

To the north in Novato, ceiling fans are cranked up at Mary's Place restaurant. A small air conditioner is on too and owner Nick Zeiden says heat isn't good for business or his electric bill.

"Since we open in the morning, I have to turn AC on, so it's cool by time customers get here," Zeiden said.

"I'm dreading it. I can't stand the heat. It's been such a hot summer," Nancy Leaf said.

Others like Leaf will be keeping cool inside, at least until the fog returns.
