SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- This holiday season is a time to give back and to help Build a Better Bay Area. Join ABC7's Day of Giving on Tuesday. Give what you can and donate to your favorite local charities.
We are highlighting several Bay Area charities and food banks that are going above and beyond for their communities -- you'll find a list of them below:
"We will distribute about a quarter of a million pounds of food today," said San Francisco-Marin Food Bank's Chief Supply Chain Officer Barbara Abbott.
And this Giving Tuesday, donations here are going much further.
"We have a triple match from Genentec, so that's every dollar that you donate will be triple matched by Genentec," Abbott said.
Normally, every $1 donated here provides two meals.
But thanks to Tuesday's triple match, every $1 donated will cover the cost of six meals!
"Giving Tuesday is particularly important, all donations are important but we can really make the dollar stretch much further because there is a triple match and with the cost of food being so expensive, it's difficult for food banks," Angela Wirch, the Senior Director of Food Sourcing and Allocation for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank said.
Wirch says, pre-pandemic, they were giving to about 32,000 households year-round.
Post-pandemic, more than four years later, the need has expanded to more than 50,000 households.
If you need ideas, we have created a short list of vetted local organizations that make a big impact in helping to build a better Bay Area. The list of community groups will be updated periodically.
