Convict in court in cold-case killings

LOS ANGELES

Fifty-one-year-old Michael Hughes is charged with sexually assaulting and strangling four women between 1986 and 1993. He appeared briefly in court Thursday before his case was continued to Aug. 6. He has not yet retained an attorney.

Cold case detectives said they identified Hughes as a suspect after carrying out new tests on DNA evidence taken from the victims.

Hughes was convicted in 1998 of killing four other women between 1992 and 1993. He is serving a life sentence without parole. He could face the death penalty if convicted of the latest charges.
