A county resident reported getting a phone call from an individual identifying himself as a collection agency employee, according to the Solano County Sheriff's Office.
The caller stated that the resident owed money to her local library, and that it was necessary to get her credit card information over the phone to pay the debt. The resident became suspicious when the scammer said that contacting the library to verify the amount wasn't necessary.
Associate director of county library services Cara Duffy Schwartz said the library notifies customers by letter and telephone if dues add up to more than $50. However, personal financial information is not collected over the phone.
Any library customer with questions about a library account should call (866) 572-7587.
Anyone who thinks a phone solicitation is a scam should to call local law enforcement to file a report.
