The dash-cam video from a trailing police car shows Michael James Woody, 23, drifting out of the left lane, crossing the sidewalk, hitting a bus stop sign and then a tree right before the car flipped over.
Woody was able to climb out and crawl to safety.
"Obviously, this person didn't see the police officer behind him, didn't really see what was going on in front of him. Just shows you how quickly distracted driving can take you off the roadway," Fort Meyers Police Department Lt. Victor Medico said.
Woody admitted to texting and taking his eyes off the roadway.
He wasn't hurt, but was cited for careless driving and texting while driving.
