RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- A group of orphaned birds got a fresh start in a new home Wednesday.

International Bird Rescue released some Snowy egrets and Black-crowned Night-Herons along the North Richmond Shoreline. A $10 million project is underway to restore the natural marsh habitat.

Rescue groups say they've been caring for a record number of Black-crowned Night-Herons this summer after a tree-trimming incident in Oakland raised awareness of the federally protected species.
