SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- California is topping the list of states where the middle class is dying.

Experts say that could make the state's road to economic recovery even more difficult.

Research published by the Center for American Progress shows middle class incomes in California declined the most of any in the country over a four-year span.

Incomes were studied between 2009 and 2013.

Economists looked at the middle 20 percent of earners.

That group's income fell by seven percent, while the state's top 20 percent had their pay bumped up one-point-three percent.
