Teen refugees to perform hip hop show in Oakland

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- An East Bay school welcomed teens from half a world away on Wednesday.

"All of us here are refugees, we live in a refugee camp," one teen said.

They went to Richmond with a message on what life is like in those camps and performed a traditional Palestinian dance called Debka.

But most of the teens who have lived their entire lives in a refugee camp near Bethlehem have gotten notice as an all girl hip-hop group called Sharouk, which has just put out their first album. "We rap in both English and Arabic to get to both sides of the world to get a message out about women and Palestine to other Palestinians to help with that and were getting a message about the conflict," Sophie Alayasa said.

The American and Palestinian teens danced the Debka together on Wednesday and if you want to see Sharouk, they are performing at Oakland's Technical High School at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
