Some Oakland students are getting encouragement from some well-known people. They all grew up in Oakland and went on to become famous musicians and athletes.

If you're feeling a little sluggish this midday, this should wake you up.

Youth Sports Nation led an assembly at Lafayette Elementary School to fire up some kids.

They used celebrities who grew up in Oakland. Bip Roberts, who used to play Major League Baseball was there. Tower of Power's Lenny Williams was also there.

The idea is that kids tend to gravitate to music and sports. So they want to use that as a jumping off spot to teach them to respect their elders and stay in school.

"You put a smile on my face because you are my future, you are why I'm here, I am here to help you any way I can," Roberts said. "I've made it to the top and I can show you to be successful. Are you with me? Two claps, two claps. I love you all."

This is the first assembly, but Oakland plans to make these regular events and even include some workshops with the students.

On Tuesday afternoon they'll head to Skyline High School. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is expected to be there along with NFL Hall of Famer Frank Biletnikoff.

They hope to get this group to visit most, if not all, of the schools in Oakland this year.
