Mohammad Qayoumi to step down as San Jose State president

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose State University's president is stepping down. Mohammad Qayoumi will leave the university next month after four years on the job.

The 63-year-old's tenure has been marred by controversy, including the handling of an incident involving bullying of an African-American student living in the dorms.

Qayoumi will be returning to his native Afghanistan, where he'll serve as an adviser to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. The two are longtime friends.

ABC7 News anchor Cheryl Jennings was the first western journalist to interview Ghani last February in Afghanistan.
