SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- About 900 people in the news industry are in San Francisco this weekend for the 25th Annual Asian American Journalist Association Convention.
One of the featured speakers is Melvin Mar who is the executive producer of the ABC hit show "Fresh Off the Boat."
The show is based on an Asian-American family and the culture shock they experience while pursuing the American dream.
Mar says the Asian American Journalist Association is proud of "Fresh Off the Boat" and says Hollywood is undergoing a lot of exciting diversity changes. "It's great to be able to have a voice in mainstream media. You know and you're right, the stereotype is we're doctors and lawyers and such and that's great, but it's a new frontier. It's exciting and it's very exciting that it's being embraced."
"Fresh Off the Boat" is the first sitcom on network television since the mid 1990s, featuring an Asian American family.
