For the first time ever, Girl Scout cookies will be sold online. This breaks tradition for the 112-year-old organization.

Scouts will be able to sell their famous cookies through a national platform called Digital Cookie. However, customers won't be able to order the treats online unless they get an invitation from the Girl Scouts.

The organization's website explains: "In true Girl Scout style, the girls always initiate the cookie sale. So if you know a Girl Scout, tell her you're interested in becoming a Digital Cookie customer and she will take it from there!"

Another option is a mobile app that includes credit card processing and direct shipping.

The Girl Scouts liked door-to-door sales because it was considered a learning experience for young scouts. The organization, however, has realized the Internet can also teach the girls valuable skills.

"For almost a century, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has been teaching girls to be leaders in the world of business and finance, and we intend to ensure that legacy continues in the digital age," Girl Scouts CEO Anna Maria Chvez said in a statement. "Digital Cookie is a game-changer for Girl Scouts, and a quantum leap forward in the evolution of the cookie program, coupling traditional sales activities with an online sales experience that teaches skills like online marketing and ecommerce, all in a digital space that puts an emphasis on learning, fun, and safety."

Online sales of Girl Scout cookies will launch Dec. 12.

The traditional cookie selling season begins in Jan.
