PHOTOS: Deadheads celebrate 'Jerry Day' in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- McLaren Park in San Francisco's Excelsior District was alive with the music of the Grateful Dead on Sunday. ABC7 News was there as more than 1,000 Deadheads celebrated Jerry Garcia.

Sunday was "Jerry Day," the annual tribute to the famous band's founder. He died in 1995, but his music and spirit lives on through this event.

"All these people are like my family," said the legendary musician's daughter, Trixie Garcia. "I've grown up with this fan base and this music, so it's like being at home for me."

Jerry Day started in 2002 to raise money to fix up a run-down playground.

This is the tenth year it's been held at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.

Mayor Ed Lee signed a proclamation naming Sunday Jerry Garcia Amphitheater Day.
