SFPD investigate LGBT mural set on fire
An LGBT mural in San Francisco's Mission District has been vandalized for a third time, this time being set on fire. SFPD are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police are back at the scene of an LGBT mural at the Galeria de la Raza in the Mission District that's now has been defaced for a third time.

The first two times the mural was spray painted. It was restored four days ago. But Monday night, someone set the wall on fire, which destroyed part of the painting.

Police are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

"I don't even have the words for this," said Manuel Serna, trying to describe the newly damaged wall.

The damage comes just days after the largest pride weekend celebration in San Francisco's history.

"Galeria de la Raza does great murals all the time. It's sad this one is getting a lot of negative attention," said Sarah Korda, a local resident.

The mural which depicts gay couples and a transgender man has been the source of contention in the Mission District. The mural was first unveiled earlier this month.

Galeria de la Raza, which is located at 24th and Bryan, spent $3,000 to replace it and must now spend more money to clean up, again.

"I think it's super messed up. Every week it's been tagged. And every time they always replace it. This time they have gone too far," said Michelle Serna.

San Francisco police are reviewing surveillance video to identify those responsible. Authorities say whoever did this would, at minimum, face arson charges.

The gallery is asking for community donations to pay for repairs. They are also planning to hold a community forum on July 18 to discuss the issue.
