Actor dressed as homeless man fools New Yorkers

NEW YORK (KGO) -- You sometimes hear people say the streets of New York are mean. But one woman passing by a man foraging for food in a trash can could not help but sympathize.

She offered the man a bag of food. What she didn't realize is that man is worth millions of dollars.

Turns out it was actor Richard Gere, who was filming his next movie.

He was apparently extremely convincing in his role. People thought he was another homeless man on the street.

The actor stayed in character the whole time and ate the food the woman gave him.

The 64-year-old co-stars in the new film, "Time Out of Mind," with Kyra Sedgwick and Jena Malone.
