Anti-Trump protesters in Oakland briefly shut down I-580 in both directions

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Protesters against President-elect Trump shut down Interstate 580, creating a traffic nightmare for drivers.

The protest started out peacefully, but at around 9:30 p.m. a splinter group made its way onto Interstate 580.

All of the protesters are now off I-580, but two people who helped shut down the highway have been arrested. Groups of protesters have been zigzagging around downtown, smashing windows, setting small fires, and spraying graffiti.

Several car dealerships on Auto Row were vandalized and at least six people have been arrested.

A thousand people gathered in Frank Ogawa Plaza to protest the election of Donald Trump.

Many fear Mr. Trump will keep his campaign promises and deport undocumented immigrants.

"I don't feel safe. I'm pretty sure no one feels safe as him as president because a lot of families will be broken," said protester Marisol Agilar.

Manuel Corona is an undocumented single father. He held a sign expressing fear of the future. "I can't imagine if I wasn't around for my daughters. I'm terrified at that thought," said protester Manuel Corona.

Wednesday night's protest march of more than 7,000 people left shattered windows and graffiti across downtown Oakland..

Oakand pastor Nicholas Alexander held a sign on Broadway, a plea for peace on the streets.

"It's OK to be angry, and disagree, but you have to put it behind you and move forward," Alexander said.

Protesters vow to return to Oakland on Friday.
