Gun stores expect to see increase in sales after San Bernardino shooting

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KGO) -- In the wake of Wednesday's San Bernardino shooting, gun stores are expecting to see an uptick gun sales. They are also seeing a growing number of people who want a concealed weapon permit.

With the growing number of mass shootings in America, the Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff store in Vacaville is seeing a rise in the demand for handgun instruction.

Guns, Fishing and Other Stuff owner Travis Morgan told ABC7 News, "Over the last couple of months the conceal weapons classes have picked up. They're usually half full. They're going to three quarters to full now."

Many believe a concealed weapon permit will give them a fighting chance during an active shooter situation.

"They feel that if they got a weapon, they can do something with it," Morgan explained.

However, fewer people actually pursue the permit after they realize there are fees, safety courses, a psychological evaluation and -- in some counties like Alameda -- you need a up to $1 million in personal liability insurance.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Pleasanton, spoke to us from Washington D.C. via FaceTime. He says the answer is not more guns; he wants universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.

Swalwell said, "We've had 352 mass shootings in America in 2015, and no one can recall a mass shooting this year where somebody who was armed in the vicinity was able to stop it."

Still, gun stores like this one expect a spike in sales the week after every mass shooting.
