PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- A Pennsylvania man is in custody after he allegedly tried to flush a baby down a toilet.

The incident happened in Pittsburgh's Mount Washington neighborhood just after midnight.

Police say it started when a man and woman living in a home in the 100 block of Southern Avenue started arguing.

"During the argument, the man pulls out a gun and he also attempted to flush the child down the toilet," said Sonya Toler, a Pittsburgh public safety officer.

The woman and the baby were able to escape. They called police and the child was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

The man surrendered just after 2:30 a.m. It's unclear what charges he will face.
