SAN JOSE -- San Jose police are investigating the city's 17th homicide of the year that happened late Thursday night, a police sergeant said.

Officers were dispatched after they received a report of a person shot in the 600 block of Gridley Street shortly after 11:05 p.m., Sgt. Heather Randol said.

A man suffering from at least one gunshot wound was driven by an acquaintance to a hospital before police arrived to the scene, Randol said.

Officers went to the hospital the victim was taken to and located him, she said.

He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Randol.

No suspects have been identified and no further information was immediately available.

Randol said detectives are at the scene conducting an investigation into the shooting, which took place near Millard McCollam Elementary School.
