SAN FRANCISCO -- The water has been shut off and the streets reopened after a big-rig struck a fire hydrant causing water to burst onto the street in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood Friday afternoon, a fire spokeswoman said.

The roads were re-opened around 2:30 p.m. just after the water was shut off.

The truck struck the fire hydrant, located in the 100 block of New Montgomery Street near Mission Street, at about 1:40 p.m., San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

The intersection was blocked as fire crews work to shut off the water flowing into the street, according to Talmadge.
