The shooting happened near the Oceanview Playground at Montana and Faxon streets at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Police say officers were chasing the suspect because they believe he was driving a stolen car.
Witnesses say it was a chaotic scene.
"As I was walking my dog, coming around the corner, this white van comes peeling around the corner then all these police cars are behind it. I'm halfway up the street and then I hear a crash and then boom, boom, boom. By the time I get up to the cop, there's cop cars swooming all over the place, there's helicopters flying all over," witness Mellody Gannon said.
Witnesses say the suspect crashed into a house and officers were trying to get him out of the car. They shot him several times but investigators say they don't know whether he had a gun.
The CHP officer who was hurt is part of a stolen vehicle task force.
Officers chased the man from San Mateo to San Francisco. The officer is expected to be OK. They haven't released the names of the suspect or the officer.
