VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- Vallejo police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting at a busy shopping center. It happened around 6 p.m. Saturday at the Vallejo Corners Shopping Center.

According to police, an officer responded to a call about a man throwing beer bottles and carrying a large hunting knife. An officer found the suspect and noticed a firearm in his waistband. Police say he refused to drop the knife and advanced on the officer.

Audio of the radio calls paints a picture of what lead up to the shooting.

Officer: "Subject has a knife and got out of his car."

Officer: "Subject has a gun in his waistband."

Dispatcher: "Copy, a gun in his waistband."

Officer: "Vallejo... two shots fired. Shots fired. I'm okay. Suspect is down."

Dispatcher: "Shots fired at Sleep Train. Starting medical."

The Sleep Train store mentioned in that call is just a few yards away from where it all happened. There is also a Target store there in the busy shopping center.

The man died at the hospital.

Police say the gun turned out to be a replica firearm.
