Levi's Stadium under fire for condition of turf field

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- If you're a 49ers fan, you liked the outcome of Sunday's win against the Baltimore Ravens. If you're a Ravens fan, not so much. You may be crying foul regarding the Niners' home field advantage.

The turf at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara is under the microscope again Monday night. This time, it's after Ravens kicker Justin Tucker slipped on the turf Sunday while attempting a field goal.

His holder grabbed the piece of turf to show how loose it was.

The team said they will not be taking questions about their troublesome turf.

It's been an issue and a mystery. The Niners spent $1.3 billion on their new stadium, so you would think for all that money the grass would be the least of their problems.

To paraphrase the San Francisco 49ers, there were 140 plays in Sunday's game against the Ravens and the field held up well in all of them except one.

In a league that aims for perfection with every detail, could this be an issue?

If this had been a singular incident, perhaps it could pass. But the 49ers have replaced their turf five times now. Why it doesn't grow in remains a mystery to staff and to fans.

"It couldn't be any worse than candlestick was," one fan said.

Remember the 1991 playoff between the Niners and Redskins? Not only did players slog through the turf in that one, some of them wore it.

For the next week, the league replaced much of that turf.

So when the team built their new stadium, it would put all the turf woes supposedly behind us. Out in Livingston, the team commissioned West Coast Turf to grow and then install acre upon acre of Bandera Bermuda.

It has worked for the San Jose earthquakes and at Stanford Stadium for the Cardinal but at Levi's Stadium - not so much.

"As much money as they spent on this place, you would think they could get the grass right," 49ers fan Harry Squires said.

The 49ers did not want to discuss this issue Monday. ABC7 News' best glance at the grass was from SKY 7 HD.

When asked if he was satisfied with the field, Coach Jim Tomsula said yes. That's easy to say when the other guy slipped.
