Bay Area aquariums take stand against plastic pollution

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A bold step has just been taken by some of the nation's leading aquariums, including two in the Bay Area.

They are joining forces to try to reduce plastic pollution in rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Nearly 9 million tons of plastic wind up in the ocean every year-- the equivalent of a dump truck full every minute of every day. The debris threatens creatures like sea turtles.

One was found with a plastic straw up its nose.

This week, the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are among 19 taking a stand nationwide.
