PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- A police officer and a 29-year-old parolee are recovering after being hurt in a shootout in Porterville, which is in Tulare County about an hour outside of Fresno.
We are learning the suspect started shooting after running from police during a traffic stop around 11 last night. Neighbors say they heard at least 10 gunshots.
The officer was hit in the leg. He and his partner fired back, hitting the suspect several times. The suspect has been identified as Ruben Carreles. He is out of surgery and is expected to survive.
Investigators say there were a number of outstanding warrants against him.
