SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- This could be the first general election in California, in which less than half the voters turn out, since local issues and the state propositions are the only things drawing people to the polls this year.
Gov. Jerry Brown is so confident of a re-election victory over Republican Neel Kashkari, he hasn't even put up a fight as he is spending very little campaign money.
When Kashkari has spent money, he uses it to promote Propositions one and two, not his own campaign. Nonetheless with two hours for the polls to close.
Preparations are underway at Democratic headquarters for a celebration and the governor is expected to stop by here, sometime after 8 p.m.
In the meantime, Brown's challenger Kashkari has been making appearances up and down the state, trying to gather last-minute votes and somehow overcome a double digit deficit in the polls. On Tuesday morning, the 41-year-old Kashkari voted in Laguna Beach and made a brief statement to reporters.
"I feel terrific you know. This has been a two year process for me focused on real issues people care about bringing jobs back to California and fixing the schools. We've run a great campaign. I'm proud of the campaign we've run and I'm glad to finally hear back from voters," Kashkari said.
Brown meantime has kept an extremely low profile throughout the campaign, and nothing's changed in these final days. He and his wife Ann Brown voted in Oakland last Thursday. Brown held an event in Williams, a small Colusa County town over the weekend and when he has talked about the election, it's only been to urge voters to vote yes on Propositions 1 and Proposition 2.
Brown attended a funeral for two different deputies in the last two days. On Tuesday he attended a funeral in Roseville for a Placer County sheriff's detective who was killed during a shooting rampage while on duty last month.
Brown will have dinner at the Governor's mansion in Sacramento and then come out to make a few comments after 8 p.m.
At some point, Brown will make an appearance at Democratic headquarters.
