American Red Cross issues emergency call for blood donors

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood donors after fewer people than expected donated in the last couple months.

The Red Cross says blood and platelet donations of all blood types are in a critical need.

There were 61,000 fewer donations in May and June. That's depleted the supply considerably.

The shortage typically worsens in summer months because prospective donors are on vacation.
