Two police officers were able to save a woman trapped in a sinking car after smashing the vehicle's window, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Paul Watts and Simon Russell, two New Zealand Police officers, answered a call around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, when a BMW rolled into the water near Auckland. According to the Herald, the officers were able to locate the car already filled three-quarters with water and one woman inside. Two other individuals were trying to hold the car from sinking.

Shanan Gray, a police commander, said that the trapped woman fled to the backseat of the vehicle where there was an air pocket for her to breathe.

"When we entered the water, I was talking to one of the (members of the public) who was trying to balance the vehicle and he said he was looking for a rock to try and smash the window," Russell told the Herald.

Russell was able to break the driver door window with a spanner he found, as Watts was able to break through the car's rear windshield with a large rock.

"At that time the car actually started to move very fast into the water. I was trying to hold the car, slowing it down from entering the water," Russell said.

After the glass was broken, Russell ran around to help the woman out of the car to safety.

"I'd say she probably only had maximum probably another minute, minute-and-a-half if she didn't make it out," Watts told the Herald.

The woman in question was transported to a hospital, where she did not suffer any injuries and was in stable condition, the Herald reports.
