SAN FRANCISCO -- An attempted robbery suspect was taken to a hospital after being shot by an off-duty police officer in San Francisco's Lower Nob Hill neighborhood early this morning, police and a neighbor said.

The shooting occurred in the 900 block of Leavenworth Street, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The attempted robbery suspect confronted the officer, who shot him, Shyy said.

Shyy did not immediately provide more information about the shooting or the condition of the suspect.

However, a neighbor who lives near the scene of the shooting said it occurred around 6 a.m. after an incident near Another Caf at the corner of Leavenworth and Pine streets.

She said she was told by police that the suspect was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

An employee at the caf declined to talk about the incident this morning and said police were at the business to interview witnesses.
