Sig-alert issued on Highway 101 in San Jose over report of burning object thrown before brush fire

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol has issued a Sig-alert along the southbound side of U.S. Highway 101 where someone may have thrown a burning object that started a brush fire, the CHP reported.

The alert, issued at 11:42 a.m., was expected to last about 30 minutes until the far right lane on southbound U.S. 101 could be cleared of fire equipment used on the brush fire, the CHP reported.

The CHP is also investigating an unconfirmed report of someone throwing a burning object from a vehicle onto the side of U.S. 101 near the scene of the fire.

The San Jose Fire Department extinguished the vegetation fire today at about 11:36 a.m. on the side of U.S. 101 north of state Highway 87.

The fire briefly closed two of the right lanes on southbound U.S. 101, officials said.

The CHP received a report of the brush fire at about 11 a.m. Sunday and San Jose fire contained it at 11:36 a.m., officials said.
