SF police, anti-violence group to hold gun buyback

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police are teaming up with a local anti-violence group to take guns off the streets.

Supervisor London Breed announced the gun buyback program on Thursday. The event is organized by United Playaz organization which got $50,000 in donations from marijuana clubs and angel investor Ron Conway to pay for the weapons.

Anyone who turns in a firearm will be given $100 and $200 for an assault weapon.

"Gun violence is happening all over San Francisco, all over the nation. But this little piece that we are putting in to take guns off the streets, could be the gun that may save your life, your kids life," said Rudy Corpuz of United Playaz.

The gun buyback program will be held Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Ellen Hutch Community Center on McAllister Street in the Fillmore District.

Police will not question people about the guns.
