SONOMA, Calif. (KGO) -- Park officials held a ceremony for the 400-year-old oak tree outside of Jack London's cottage.

The tree is still standing, although arborists say it's infected with fungus and is dying. The oak has undergone a series of tests to determine whether it can safely stand.

On Sunday, officials planted a seedling from the tree as a symbolic gesture of renewal. The seedling will grow to face the original oak.

The event got underway at 10 a.m. at Jack London State Historic Park.
