CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and his brother, Seth Curryof the Portland Trail Blazers, have more on the line than just family bragging rights when the 3-Point Contest takes place Saturday night as part of All-Star Weekend.
The pair has a sizable wager on the line that has ramifications throughout the remainder of their careers.
"Family's obviously big for us and like our support," Stephen said Saturday. "So kind of wanted to weave that into the bet, so whoever loses has to pick up the tab for all the tickets any time we play against each other for the rest of our careers. Which, the stakes are high considering how many people show up for our games. I got to get the best of him tonight. I know he's very confident though."
Stephen said he "knows for a fact" that many of his family members will be cheering for Seth to win.
"I hope to pull the upset tonight," Stephen said jokingly, drawing laughter from the assembled media.
For his part, Seth said the brothers have split their lifelong series in various shooting contests.
"I'm sure it's very close to 50-50," Seth said. "There have been a lot of workouts, a lot of shooting drills, in a lot of gyms throughout the years, so it will just be another day."
Saturday night's competition is another highlight in a weekend full of them for the first basketball family of Charlotte.
Stephen and Seth's father, Dell, was a standout sharpshooter for the Charlotte Hornets for 10 years and is one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Stephen said Friday that Dell likely will make an appearance Saturday night.
"He's our role model," Seth said. "And the reason why we're in the NBA today."
Dell had a piece of advice for his sons heading into Saturday night's competition.
"He did it twice and he said he never got out of the first round," Seth said. "He performed terribly, so he said we got to do better than him."
Dell's wife, Sonya, pulled off one of the biggest highlights of the weekend Friday when she clinched a family shootout with an underhanded half-court shot that quickly went viral. Sonya set off a huge celebration during the Curry Family Foundation event, complete with a celebratory run down the floor with her arms at her sides that Stephen has used in games before.
"Yeah, I was surprised because like the first four she flung underhand, they didn't make it to the rim," Stephen said of the shot. "And that last one, it just looked good from the time it left her hand. And I was like, wham, bam, can of ham, that's going in. And so it was just exciting for the whole family to be there. Very fitting ending to the day and to that event that she made that shot. And her celebration game was nice."
The entire family is enjoying their moment as ambassadors for a city that has given them great basketball joy over the years. Both Stephen and Seth are hoping they can provide another memorable moment in front of family and friends on Saturday night.
"Charlotte means everything to me," Stephen said. "This where I learned to play the game. So many people in this city got to watch me grow up in the game. To be honest, me and my brother, we always dreamed of being a part of All-Star Weekend, doing 3-point shootouts, playing in the game or whatever. And for it to come back full circle, for it to be here, playing where my dad played for 10 years. This will be a weekend we'll remember for a very long time, for sure."
