Judge orders Brock Turner to get drug and alcohol treatment

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A former Stanford swimmer convicted of sexual assault stood in front of Judge Aaron Persky this morning. It was the same infamous duo together again less than two months after a sentence that outraged many in the Bay Area, across the nation and around the world.

It was a lightning speed court appearance lasting only minutes. The judge ordered Brock Turner to get drug and alcohol treatment as part of his sentence.

A probation officer recommended the move and Judge Aaron Persky agreed. As part of that, the former Stanford swimmer will likely receive periodic drug testing. There was no objection from the defense.

This morning is just the latest in what's been a controversial case. The 20-year-old former athlete received six months in jail after sexually assaulting a drunk and unconscious woman at a fraternity party. He was convicted on three counts of felony sexual assault. There have also been repeated claims Turner lied to probation officers about this drug use and party habits prior to attending Stanford; so today's decision could be an indication of that -- lies that many felt were overlooked by Judge Persky in the original court proceedings.

Meanwhile, the judge has been met with an outcry of protests that his sentence was way too lenient. There are currently two major efforts to recall Judge Persky from the bench as a result of this case: a petition on change.org that as of this morning has more than 1.2 million supporters. There's also a recall effort headed by a Stanford professor that will likely only happen next year because of some technicalities The Santa Clara Registrars Office and no paperwork has yet been filed to collect signatures.

As for Turner, when he's released from jail, scheduled for sometime in early September, he'll have three years probation, participate in sex rehab programs and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
