MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KGO) -- A Mountain View man signed a month-to-month agreement to store his belongings at a local storage facility, but backing out of that agreement has proved to be difficult.
The most frustrating thing about promised refunds can be actually getting that money, and 7 On Your Side's Michael Finney stepped in to help one local man.
When Mark Marcellini moved in to a Mountain View apartment, he decided to rent a storage unit at Peninsula Storage.
"So I wanted to keep my tools at home and all the overload stuff at a separate unit," he said.
He quickly had buyer's remorse.
"I went back two hours later and I said, I made the wrong decision. I don't want the storage unit and they said, no problem," he said.
Marcellini, a carpenter by trade , decided to build his own storage container.
He said Peninsula Storage promised him a refund within 30 days.
"So I waited to see it on my bank statement and I never saw that," he said.
He says he called Peninsula Storage five times asking about his refund of $140 and got nowhere.
Attempting to get his $140 refund turned into quite a headache.
"After a minimum of 90 days of frustrations and lost sleep and stress, I didn't know what to do," he said.
He eventually decided to turn to 7 On Your Side. After a call was placed to Peninsula Storage, a check was in the mail within a week.
The company declined an opportunity to explain what happened.
Peninsula Storage did call Marcellini to apologize.
"They said it was a procedural error on their part and I slipped through the cracks," he said.
Mark is happy he finally got his refund.
