Demolition to begin of Bay Bridge cantilever

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Preparations will be underway to cut and separate the original cantilever section of the old eastern Bay Bridge.

Bridge officials are set to provide more details about the demolition later this morning. They say the cut is part of the first phase of the demolition process. Once the cantilever is separated at its center, the contractor can begin removing steel members.

The $9.4 million temporary bike path on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge is also about to be torn down. The path is less than seven months old, but has to go to make way for the new permanent path slated to open next Monday.
