SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KGO) -- The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety issued a traffic advisory for both directions of Central Expressway after two died in an accident in Sunnyvale.

Central Expressway in both directions is closed between Bernardo and Mary streets.

Two people died in a car crash Saturday evening in Sunnyvale, a public safety officer said.

The crash was reported at about 6 p.m. on the Central Expressway just east of North Bernardo Avenue.

A 2-door coupe was traveling east on the Central Expressway when the driver lost control of the car and it struck a tree in the center median of the road, Sgt. Ken Chetcuti said.

Bystanders were able to get one person out of the vehicle and firefighters got the other person out.

Paramedics tried to save both lives but both died at the scene, Chetcuti said.
