Two CHP officers injured when truck slams into patrol car on Highway 680

SAN JOSE -- A crash on Interstate Highway 680 in San Jose late Saturday night left two California Highway Patrol officers injured, according to the CHP.

Around 11 p.m., two officers were sitting in a CHP vehicle in the highway's southbound lanes, near North Capitol Avenue, providing traffic control for a disabled vehicle, CHP officials said.

The officers had set up a flare pattern and had the emergency lights on their vehicle activated, according to CHP officials.

When a driver in a black Dodge Ram pickup truck failed to notice the flares, he slammed on the brakes. Because of the wet road conditions, the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the back of the patrol car, CHP officials said.

The driver of the truck was uninjured while the two officers suffered minor injuries. Both officers were taken to a hospital for treatment and were released several hours later.

Investigators determined the truck's driver was not under the influence of alcohol. They believe speed and wet road conditions most likely caused the crash.

The CHP is reminding drivers to remember to reduce their speeds during wet weather.
