WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- A busy street in downtown Walnut Creek was shut down overnight while public works crews fixed a huge water main break.

The break was first reported at 11:43 p.m. last night on the 1,200 block of South California Boulevard and it was shut off at 2:21 a.m. Officials have not given an explanation as to why it took so long to fix the break.

Officials said there was a cap that was loose and pressure built to a point where it burst.

Despite the large amount of water that gushed out, it does not appear to have caused any damage to businesses. Crews said the water flowed directly to storm drains.
