Storm preparation underway in North Bay
A major storm is expected to hit the Bay Area later this week and in the North Bay preparations are already underway.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- In the North Bay, storm preparations are already underway for this week's major storm.

Arborist Aaron Corbiere is running a race against time and Mother Nature and all bets are off.

Corbiere is in Novato removing two dozen dead or diseased pine trees from the side of a hill which could topple when a big storm hits the Bay Area this week.

"I've had five emergency calls in the last eight days. If the forecast holds with 70 mph winds, it will be off the charts I think," he said.

Mill Valley fire battalion chief Scott Barnes is watching levels on Corte Madera Creek and will soon issue an email warning to residents in low lying areas about possible flooding.

"It's also up to residents to be aware of the weather, high tides and heavy rain can bring flooding," Barnes said.

Candace Paine is preparing for the storm, by shoring up her restaurant, Mama's Royal Caf in Mill Valley with sandbags and a lot of hope.

"If we have three inches of water, we'll have to get rid of mud," Paine said.

She said she got 12 sandbags and she hopes that's enough.

Last week, heavy rains flooded Hwy 101 in Marin City, bringing traffic to a standstill. Barricades are up at a park and ride lot on Shoreline Highway, where more flooding is likely this week.

Josh Weinberg at Terra Patio has little protection from the weather. All of his outdoor furniture inventory is outdoors.

"The issue is cars can't get here if it's too flooded," Weinberg said. "There was one day last week we couldn't open, so that hurt our business."

The California Emergency Management Agency wants people to be ready for worst case scenarios, that includes stocking emergency kits with battery-operated radios, flashlights and batteries, a three-day supply of food and water for everyone in the family, and a manual can opener.
