Thieves steal packages from mail trucks in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Real life grinches have been targeting mail trucks in San Jose. A postal inspector said the most recent theft happened last Wednesday on Deland Avenue in the Willow Glen area.

The thieves broke in through the locked back door of the truck and stole four plastic tubs of small packages.

One hundred customers in the neighborhood received a notice from the Postal Inspection Service notifying them of the theft.

There was another theft on Nov. 30.

Anyone who thinks they had financial information, checks or credit cards stolen is advised to contact their bank or credit card company.

Anyone who is victimized by financial fraud should contact the Postal Inspection Service. Inspector Jeff Fitch said more than a dozen mail trucks have been broken into in San Jose since Spring.

The penalties for stealing mail include up to 5 years in federal prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the mail thief.
